Holiday closures

The forex market has no single central exchange — it runs over a global interbank network. In principle it trades around the clock, but real liquidity concentrates in three rotating sessions (Asia, Europe, North America). It generally closes over the weekend (from Saturday until early Sunday). On global holidays such as New Year’s Day and Christmas the major banks are closed and liquidity is very thin, though quoting does not stop entirely.

FAQ

When is the forex market open?
The forex market trades 24/5. It opens around 22:00 UTC on Sunday (the Sydney/Wellington session) and closes around 22:00 UTC on Friday (the New York afternoon), running continuously in between.
What are the three main forex sessions?
The Asian session (Tokyo/Hong Kong, roughly 00:00–09:00 UTC), the European session (London/Frankfurt, roughly 07:00–16:00 UTC) and the North American session (New York, roughly 12:00–21:00 UTC). The Europe–US overlap (about 12:00–16:00 UTC) is the most liquid window of the day.
When are the major currency pairs most active?
EUR/USD and GBP/USD are most active during the Europe–US overlap; USD/JPY during the Asian session; AUD/USD and NZD/USD in the early Asian session.
Does forex close for Christmas or other holidays?
It does not shut down completely. On global holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s Day the major banks are closed, so quotes are thin and spreads widen, but electronic venues can still execute.
